Understanding readiness before we ask for progress

At HyFlex Academy, we don’t start by asking what a young person can already do academically. We start by asking something more fundamental: are they, right now, in a place where learning is even possible?

That question sits at the heart of the LEAF Readiness2Learn Assessment Framework™, the tool that underpins how we get to know every young person who joins us, and how we shape the individualised path they follow while they’re here.

Why readiness comes first

Many of the young people we work with haven’t struggled with learning itself. They’ve struggled with the environment, the relationships and the emotional weight around it. Asking a young person to engage with a curriculum before understanding where they genuinely are, emotionally, socially and academically, sets them up to fail before they’ve begun.

Readiness2Learn was built to close that gap. It’s a staged, holistic, practitioner-led assessment, completed by the adults who know a young person, not extracted from a questionnaire the young person fills in themselves. For pupils who may not yet have the self-awareness, literacy or trust to self-report reliably, that distinction matters enormously.

The four domains

Readiness2Learn looks across four connected areas of a young person’s life:

  • Learning environment – how a pupil relates to their physical and social surroundings: their ability to be present, to engage with structure, and to work alongside peers and staff. For many of our young people, this is the foundation everything else is built on.
  • Emotional & behavioural – regulation, anxiety, trauma responses, behavioural patterns, identity and resilience, assessed across six domains and thirty individual indicators. We believe this is often the single strongest predictor of how ready a young person is to engage with education, and it has to be understood before any academic expectation is set.
  • Academic – an honest, compassionate picture of a young person’s current functional skills, from Entry Level through to Level 2, across number, measures, data and literacy. Not where a pupil is expected to be, but where they actually are, right now.
  • Future aspirations – a young person’s own sense of what’s possible for them: their goals, their interests, their hopes for the future, and how these can be woven into their learning plan. Progress means far more when it’s connected to something a young person actually wants for themselves.

A living picture, not a single snapshot

Readiness2Learn isn’t a one-off test. We reassess across the year, building a longitudinal picture of how a young person is progressing across all four domains, not just academically, but emotionally, socially and personally. That picture directly shapes the one-to-one sessions, small group work and outdoor learning each pupil is offered, and it evolves as they do.

What it means in practice

For a young person arriving at HyFlex Academy, often after a difficult journey through other settings, this approach means we’re not asking them to prove themselves against a standard that was never built with them in mind. We’re building a genuinely individual education pathway around who they are today, with a clear, honest view of where they’re starting from and where they might be able to go.

It’s a framework, not a formula, and it’s the reason a personalised path at HyFlex Academy means something real: because it’s built on a proper understanding of the whole young person, not just a subject level or a diagnostic label.

This is the thinking behind everything we do here. In future posts, we’ll share more about how it plays out day to day, one young person at a time.
